What is Peptide Purity and Why Does It Matter?

Peptide purity refers to the percentage of the desired peptide compound in a sample, with the remainder being impurities from synthesis, degradation, or contamination. Purity directly impacts research reliability and is the single most important quality metric for research peptides.

How Purity is Measured

The gold standard for purity measurement is HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography). HPLC separates the target peptide from impurities based on their chemical properties. The purity percentage is calculated from peak areas on the resulting chromatogram. A 99% pure peptide means 99% of the sample is the target compound and 1% is impurities.

Purity Grades

>95% (Research grade): Acceptable for most research applications. >98% (High purity): Preferred for quantitative research. >99% (Ultra-high purity): Ideal for sensitive research. Proxiva Labs provides 99.99% purity — the highest available standard.

Why Higher Purity Matters

Accurate dosing: Impurities mean you’re getting less active peptide per milligram. A 90% pure 5mg vial contains only 4.5mg of actual peptide. Research validity: Impurities can produce off-target effects that confound results. Reproducibility: Consistent purity between batches ensures reproducible experiments. Safety: Synthesis byproducts and degradation products may have unknown effects.

Common Impurities

Deletion sequences (missing amino acids), truncated sequences (incomplete synthesis), oxidized variants, deamidation products, and residual solvents or reagents from synthesis.

Verifying Purity

Always request and review the certificate of analysis (COA) before using peptides. Third-party testing provides unbiased verification. Mass spectrometry should accompany HPLC to confirm molecular identity in addition to purity.
